In the Montreal area he was heard with people like Hazel Scott, Phyllis Marshall and Sonny Rollins and was approached by Stan Kenton to join his band. An addiction to heroin prevented him from accepting and shortly thereafter he committed himself to the State Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky for three and months of drug rehab. Much later, aware of my problems with alcohol and that I was of Irish descent, he would call me every year from Florida on St. Patrick’s day to see that I still on the road to recovery – He would inquire, "How’s your ‘jones’? After Lexington, he pretty well dropped out of music, although I heard him in 1953 sitting in on bongos with Paul Bley, Brew Moore, Dick Garcia, etc. at the "Jazz Workshop" above the Video Café on the south side of then Dorchester Blvd . He worked as a security guard for Rolls Royce, a real estate agent and, in the 80’s, as an international courier. In the latter part of his life, his friend Ralph Whims would chauffeur him out the Roxboro, Quebec home of pianist Keith White [Andre’s dad] where he would again sit behind the drums for weekly jam sessions. He married Rollande Hamel in 1946 and they had six children, John, Patricia, Catherine, Eddy, Stephen and Danny. He also leaves a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends.  
The Norman Marshall Villeneuve Jazz Collection Fond is part of the Concordia University Archive.Funding became increasingly difficult to find, and Jazz City’s 25th year was also its last hurrah as the festival fell into bankruptcy.As a member of the Emanon Jazz Society I got to meet him on a few occasions when the Stan Kenton band played Montreal and we were allowed to be in the Seville theatre for rehearsals and a "Concert In Miniature" broadcast.They are influenced by Johnny Mercer, "Hoagy" Carmichael, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and the Gershwin brothers, to name a few.  
He was born in Montreal on February 5, 1930 and began playing drums when he was 17, studying with Donat Gariepy. He started working professionally almost immediately and from 1948 worked at spots around Montreal like the El Mocambo, the Plaza Hotel and the Hale Hakala. He first worked with the Paul Bley trio in 1952 at Chalet in Ste. Agathe and then worked with that renowned pianist off and on including some of the Jazz Workshop concerts at the Chez Paree. He appears with the Bley trio in the 1953 Associated Screen News 10 minute film, "Canadian Cameo Series – Spotlight #5". He was also heard with the Steve Garrick big band and with the same leader in a smaller group at the Chez Paree in the late 50s. He recorded with a Garrick Nonet for the CBC in October 1958 along with Arnold Butterfield and Wally Dunbar, Al Baculis, Jackson Rider, Nick Ayoub, Freddie Nichols, Hal Gaylor and the pianist leader.

Jones studied classical piano, first with Madame Bonner and then with Daisy Peterson Sweeney, the elder sister of his idol, Oscar Peterson. When Jones asked Sweeney if she would help him perfect his art as a pianist, she accepted but warned him that he would need to devote significant time to this challenging discipline. He was soon performing in the United States as part of the touring show The Bandwagon, which was also staged at Café St-Michel. Jones studied theory and composition with Sweeney in 1959 and 1960.  
  
Nominations for the 2010 Juno Awards were announced this past week. Pianist/vocalist Diana Krall also captured nominations for Album of the Year and Artist of the Year for her Quiet Nights release. For outstanding service to jazz education, at the twenty-first IAJE conference in 1994, Ranee received the International Association of Jazz Educators Award. As an educator, Ranee has been part of theUniversity of Lavalfaculty in Quebec City andThe Schulich School of Musicof McGill University faculty for over twenty years. She was appointed as a Member Of The Order Of Canada and in 2007 was given an award for appreciation and contribution to the development of the McGill Jazz Program by the McGill Schulich School of Music. For Black History Month in February 2013, Canada Post issued a stamp featuring Jones. In 2015, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal named him a "Great Montrealer." He also won the 2015 RIDEAU Hommage award from the Réseau indépendant des diffuseurs d’événements artistiques unisfor being an enduring figure in the Quebec music scene. From 1982 to 1999, Oliver Jones recorded more than 15 albums, including Lights of Burgundy , Cookin’ at Sweet Basil (recorded in 1988 at New York’s Sweet Basil nightclub) and Just in Time .  
  
She sings standards, her own songs, and an impressive variety of covers with combos large and small, including Calgary’s Prime Time Big Band. Her previous four albums, with songs ranging from jazz standards to pop covers and Christmas favourites, have garnered her Top 10 radio play across Canada and fans around the world. She divides her time between Calgary and Montréal, and is excited that Because I Loved will be launching in both cities. Her latest release "What’s Going On" is an inspired and deeply moving collection of originals, standards and some surprises! Throughout her career Ranee has performed with many jazz notables, including Clark Terry, Bill Mayes, Herb Ellis, Red Mitchell, Milt Hinton, Oliver Jones and Terry Clarke, to name a few. Lee is no stranger to the road; she has toured with her own group in the United States and has played at many prestigious jazz festivals throughout Canada as well as Spain, France, England and Haiti. Deanne recruited some of Montréal’s premier jazz talent for the project, including drummer Jim Doxas , pianist Paul Shrofel, bassist Adrian Vedady, and guest vocalist Ranee Lee. She divides her time between Calgary and Montréal, and is excited that Because I Loved will be launching in both cities.  
  
Ranee settled in Montreal, Quebec, over twenty years ago and focused on her singing. Now she has become one of Canada's most recognizable jazz singers. Rita is Canada’s most highly-acclaimed female roots and blues artist. A Juno Award winner and winner of major Canadian blues awards, including multiple Maple Blues Awards and CBCs Great Canadian Blues Award, Rita is known as the "Goddess of the Blues" across Canada. She recently released the soundtrack for her award winning documentary, Music From The Big House, her 9th recording and she recently appeared on CBC Radio’s Q with Jian Ghomeshi. Throughout her career, Ranee has performed with many jazz notables, including Clark Terry, Terry Clarke, Bill Mayes, Herbie Ellis, Red Mitchell, Milt Hinton, Oliver Jones, John Bunch and George Arvanitas. Lee has toured with her own group throughout North America and abroad, performing at many prestigious jazz festivals.  
  
Later, I discovered Respect as an anthem for the feminist movement. 1985 – Performs with various artists including Henry Mancini, Marvin Hamlisch and Mel Torme. Soloist on the first Denny Christianson Big Band recording.Performs at the Ottawa Jazz Festival with the Vic Vogel Big Band. 1980 – Graduates with distinction in classical trumpet performance from McGill. Appears around Montreal with jazz and commercial groups, big bands, Latin bands, as well as in Broadway musicals, recording studios, radio and television. In 2006 Di Lauro completed a Masters in Wind Band Conducting at McGill University in 2006. He is an active faculty member both at McGill and University of Montreal as Big Band conductor and trumpet teacher.
